Fulbright Tasmania SCHOLARSHIP

sponsored by the Tasmanian Government and the University of Tasmania

The Fulbright Tasmania Scholarship was announced in February 2006 by the then Tasmanian Minister for Economic Development, Lara Giddings MHA; Vice-Chancellor of the University of Tasmania, Professor Daryl Le Grew; and U.S. Consul General to Melbourne, Mr Earl Irving.

The Fulbright Tasmania Scholarship was the first state-sponsored Fulbright Scholarship and annually provides an opportunity for a talented Tasmanian to undertake study or research in the United States for three to twelve months.

The Scholarship is open to Tasmanian residents, covering all fields of study in all scholarship categories, including; Postgraduate, Postdoctoral, Senior Scholar and Professional to undertake 3-12 months research or study in the U.S.

Applicants are considered by their academic and professional merit; clearly defined and achievable project; and the potential for their project to add value and contribute to Tasmania’s economic development and further research opportunities.

At the launch of the Scholarship Ms Giddings said, "This scholarship will assist in building long-term linkages between Tasmania and the United States in the mutually beneficial areas of research and development. It’s about recognising and encouraging the substantial talent we have in the State and building international partnerships".

" Fulbright Scholarships are internationally recognised and certainly ‘open doors’ in the United State,' Vice-Chancellor, University of Tasmania, Professor Le Grew added.

"I congratulate the Tasmanian Government and the University of Tasmania for their initiative. It [Fulbright Tasmania Scholarship] demonstrates Tasmania’s vision for the future through the support of research and development, and the development of long-term international relations,' said U.S. Consul General to Melbourne, Mr Earl Irving. He commended the Government and University for establishing the first state-based Fulbright Scholarship in the fifty-six year history of the Fulbright program in Australia.
