FULBRIGHT SCHOLARS TO BROADEN THEIR HORIZONS IN THE U.S.
Effective management of pain in critically ill patients, economic development for poorer communities, cybercrime prevention, improving nerve regeneration and the effects of smoke on wine grapevines are some of the exciting research projects which Australia’s 2009 Fulbright Scholars will carry out in the U.S. over the next year.
The Chargé D’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy, Mr Daniel Clune, and the Premier of Tasmania, the Hon. David Bartlett MP, presented the twenty-three 2009 Fulbright Scholars with their Scholarships at the Annual Fulbright Presentation Dinner at Moorilla Estate in Hobart on 12 March 2009.
The Fulbright Scholarships will enable the Scholars to study, or conduct further research in their chosen field, in the United States over the next twelve months at leading U.S. universities such as Harvard, Yale, University of California, and University of Texas.
In congratulating the Scholars, the Chargé D’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy, Mr Daniel Clune, praised the range and talents of the Scholars.
“I offer my congratulations and best wishes to the 23 outstanding Australians who have been recognized as Fulbright Scholars in 2009. This group reflects the academic merit and excellence for which the program is renowned. These outstanding Fulbright Scholars came from a wide pool of applicants across Australia and represent a rich diversity of fields.”
Premier Bartlett reflected on the importance of education and international scholarship networks to Australia.
“The wonderful people I’ve met here tonight are about to embark on an adventure that will change their lives, but not only their own. They will make new friendships in the U.S. and bring new connections and knowledge back to Australia. The new collaborations and the knowledge exchange that come out of their Scholarships will benefit both of our countries.”

The prestigious Fulbright Program is the largest educational scholarship of its kind and was created by U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright and the U.S. Government in 1946. Aimed at promoting mutual understanding through educational exchange, it currently operates between the U.S. and 150 other countries.
The Australian Fulbright Program was established in 1949 through the first treaty ever signed between the Australian and U.S. governments. The Prime Minister of Australia and the U.S. Ambassador serve as honorary Co-Chairs and the program is funded by both governments and a select group of sponsors. Applications for 2010 Fulbright Scholarships open on 1 June, 2009.
