Please note that while the application forms are generic (they are used across 160 countries), the guidelines provided in the downloadable PDF are specific to Australia so please follow these directions carefully.

Key Criteria for applicants:

  • Must be an American citizen

  • Cannot hold dual US-Australian citizenship

  • May be eligible to apply for more than one scholarship 

  • Apply in 2016 for the 2017 round – successful applicants must start their program in February 2018. Please note that the 2017 round is the 2017-18 academic year.

  • Successful applicants must travel to Australia on Temporary Work (International Relations) Visa (subclass 403). Please be aware that strict residency constraints apply, including a two year home residency requirement upon return to America

  • Please note that Scholars are encouraged to collaborate with their host institution during their scholarship period by giving workshops or short seminars, but should not teach intensive seminars or coursework. Paid work cannot be undertaken in Australia while on a Fulbright Scholarship in accordance with visa regulations.

  • Postgraduate Scholarships - For postgraduate students undertaking their PhD to conduct research and/or study in Australia; or to support enrolment in an Australian postgraduate program such as a Masters. This Includes the prestigious Fulbright-Anne Wexler Scholarship in Public Policy.

  • Postdoctoral Scholarships  - For researchers who have completed their PhD in the past two to three years (up to five years in extenuating circumstances) to undertake postdoctoral research at an Australian Institution. 

  • Senior Scholarships - For senior level academics (at Associate Professor or full Professor level) to undertake research at an Australian institution

  • Distinguished Chairs - For leading U.S. Professors to undertake research at the sponsoring institution, the Australian American Fulbright Commission program offers four of forty Distinguished Chair positions world wide.
