Twenty-two outstanding Australians have been awarded prestigious Fulbright Scholarships, which will enable them to study, or conduct further research in their chosen field, in the United States over the next twelve months.
The 2007 Australian Fulbright Scholars were announced today by Australian-American Fulbright Commission Executive Director, Mr Mark Darby, who said the successful scholars demonstrate the breath and diversity in research amongst Australia’s brightest.
“The twenty-two 2007 Fulbright Scholars will study a diverse range of fields while in the U.S. over the coming year, including Indigenous health, classical flute, fish-killing algal, scramjets, and leukaemia.”
The scholarships, worth up to $40,000, allow each scholar to study and research in the U.S. for up to twelve months.
The scholars come from across Australia and include state government and CSIRO staff, postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, and senior academics. “Fulbright Scholarships are not just about the individual research, but also the institutional linkages and professional networks that scholars establish. A Fulbright Scholarship opens doors and unique opportunities,” stated Mr Darby.

The prestigious Fulbright Program is the largest educational scholarship of its kind and was created by U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright and the U.S. Government in 1946. Aimed at promoting mutual understanding through educational exchange, it currently operates between the U.S. and 150 other nations.
The Australian Fulbright Program was established in 1949 through the first treaty ever signed between the Australian and U.S. governments. The two way scholarships are administered by the Australian-American Fulbright Commission headquartered in Canberra and funded by the Australian and U.S. Governments and a select group of corporate partners. Over 2,600 Australians and 2,000 Americans have been recognised as Fulbright Scholars to study in our respective countries during the past 58 years.
Applications for 2008 Fulbright Scholarships open 1 June 2007 and close 31 August 2007.
