Professional Scholarships
Fulbright Professional Scholarships are available to Australian citizens, in junior to mid career positions, poised for advancement to a senior role from the private, public and not-for-profit sectors (outside academe), or junior to middle level academics whose professional focus is industry related and whose research and sharing of results within the industry is clearly outlined. As a guideline, Professional Scholars are generally aged between 30-45 years. The scholarship supports a 3-4 month program of professional development in the United States.
Application proposals must include an educational component (such as a short-course and/or research) and identify a potential U.S. host institution at which the applicant would spend a significant period of their scholarship. It may also involve other forms of professional experience including visits to relevant organisations. While the program may include attending a conference, this does not fulfil the educational requirements of the scholarship. The Professional Scholarship does not fund postgraduate (i.e. Masters or PhD) study programs.
2009 APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN
The Commission offers up to five Professional Fulbright Scholarships annually. Applicants who apply for one of the sponsored or endowed scholarships (listed below) will automatically be considered for the Fulbright Professional Scholarship (General).
- Fulbright (General) - This Scholarship is open to all fields of study
- Fulbright Tasmania Scholarship sponsored by the Tasmanian Government and the University of Tasmania
- Australian-United States Alliance Studies - sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
- Business/Industry (Coral Sea) - to research an identified problem / opportunity relevant to Australian industry / business
- Vocational Education and Training (VET) - sponsored by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
Professional Scholarship benefits
- Payment of A$25,000, which covers travel and living expenses.
- Transport and accommodation to attend an Orientation Program and the Fulbright Presentation Dinner in Australia (March)
- Transport and accommodation to an Enrichment Seminar with international Fulbright Scholars in the U.S.
- Professional network opportunities with Australian, U.S. and international Fulbright Scholars and distinguished alumni.
Duration
- Fulbright Professional Scholarships are for a minimum of three and maximum of four months.
- Programs of longer duration may be proposed but financial support will be limited to the maximum four months.
- Fulbright funding is for the first four months only and applicants must be able to demonstrate they have sufficient additional funds to support themselves and any dependants during their stay in the U.S.
Note: The Fulbright Australian-United States Alliance Studies Scholarship supports a 3-6 month program. Funding is limited to six months only.
