Fulbright Alumni Recognised in Australia Day Honours
Five distinguished Fulbright alumni were named in the 2017 Australia Day Honours list, adding to the burgeoning number of Fulbrighters who have been formally recognised for their contributions and service to their disciplines.
The awardees include The Hon Justice Stephen John Gageler, a Justice of the Australian High Court since 2012; Emeritus Professor Larry Sitsky AM, who was previously appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2000; and Kristian Jules Wale, who just recently concluded his Fulbright research at Arizona State University.

COMPANION (AC) IN THE GENERAL DIVISION
The Honourable Justice Stephen John Gageler (1986 Fulbright Postgraduate Scholar, Law, Harvard University), High Court of Australia. For eminent service to the law and to the judiciary through contributions in the areas of constitutional, public, international, common and criminal law, to legal reform, education and academic discourse, and to professional organisations.
OFFICER (AO) IN THE GENERAL DIVISION
Emeritus Professor Larry Sitsky AM (1988 Fulbright Scholar in Residence, Music, University of Cincinnati). For distinguished service to the arts as a composer and concert pianist, to music education as a researcher and mentor, and through musical contributions to Australia’s contemporary culture.
MEMBER (AM) IN THE GENERAL DIVISION
Professor Alan Holland Bittles (1989 Fulbright Senior Scholar, Genetics, University of Michigan). For significant service to medical education in the field of genomics, as an academic and researcher, and to professional groups.
Professor Catherine Therese Turner (2006 Fulbright Senior Scholar, Nursing, Harvard University). For significant service to nursing through research into nurse practice and population health, and to professional organisations.
MEDAL (OAM) IN THE GENERAL DIVISION
Mr Kristian Jules Wale (2016 Fulbright Coral Sea Scholar, Business and Industry, Arizona State University). For service to youth, and to the community.
