Fulbright Postgraduate Award

“During times of both conflict and peace, Australia and the United States will play critical roles in addressing economic crises and dilemmas of underdevelopment – both of which have important implications for international relations and national security. As a predicate for success in this arena we must ensure a future of cooperation and mutual understanding”.

Jeffrey Glick one of twelve Americans to be awarded a U.S. Fulbright Postgraduate Award to Australia. Jeffery is a graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and serves as a Lieutenant in the U.S Army. In Australia, Jeffery will complete a Masters in International and Development Economics at the Asia Pacific School of Economics and Government (APSEG) at the Australian National University (ANU).

“Studying development economics will provide me with an interdisciplinary understanding of development policies and provide the knowledge to tackle problems faced by both the U.S and Australia. My particular interest is in studying effective economic development policies in post-disaster and post-conflict situations.” Jeffery expressed.

In 2005, Jeffrey was awarded the Superintendent’s Distinguished Cadet Award for academic, military and physical excellence. He has served as a West Point delegate in the NATO Student Summit and represented the U.S. Military Academy at the Istanbul Pan-Atlantic Student Summit.

In pursuing a Fulbright scholarship to Australia, Jeffrey hopes to contribute to a future of strong American-Australian relations, promote cross-cultural understanding, study and explore the subjects of international and development economics and to broaden his own perspectives as a military officer.

“To be a soldier and a diplomat, a student of art and science, a military officer and a servant of society—is a transition of characters that I endeavour to practice with an open mind.” Jeffery added.

As a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Jeffrey plans to join a Combat Engineer Unit and serve as a platoon leader. Later, he plans to become a Civil Affairs Officer specialising in Economic Development with a focus on South East Asia. At the School of Asian Studies, he is also studying the Indonesian Language.

“I know that my ability to contribute to any long-term solutions in economic development requires further intellectual exploration combined with pragmatic application. I look forward to the diverse educational and research opportunities at the Asia Pacific School of Economics and Government. The school is Australia’s leading institute focused on Australia, Asia and the Pacific, and provides a unique opportunity to study amongst a talented body of international students,” Jeffrey explained.
