2009 Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship

“As an aspiring orchestral flautist, it is essential for me to gain a wealth of experiences. The classical music scene in the United States is exciting with a wonderfully rich music tradition and world-class orchestras and conductors. To be immersed in this culture would be inspirational and ideal.”

Catherine Gregory, a Master of Music student at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, will have the opportunity to spend a year studying at

Carnegie Mellon School of Music in Pittsburgh, thanks to a Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship. This opportunity will allow Catherine to further develop her musical and performance skills.

“A musician is always evolving. The threads of your musical identity are woven from your inner musical convictions, but are also fashioned from the perpetual quest to meet the challenges, learn from the experiences and revel in the opportunities. I hope to further cultivate my skills in flute performance by studying in the vibrant musical landscape of the United States,” Catherine said.

Catherine has a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours in Advanced performance from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University and she was awarded the University Medal for Academic Excellence in 2007. She has performed as Principal Flute with the Queensland Youth Symphony on tour to Europe and also in the 2008 Bangalow music festival under the mentorship of acclaimed chamber ensemble, Southern Cross Soloists. In 2008 Catherine was the winner of the Jim Massie Memorial Prize and The Queensland Conservatorium Postgraduate Prize. She was also the 2007 and 2006 winner of the prestigious James Carson Memorial Flute Prize, presented by the Queensland Flute Guild.

Catherine has also performed Mozart’s Flute and Harp concerto as a soloist with the Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra.

When she returns to Australia, Catherine aspires to a position in one of the professional orchestras within Australia. Her experiences will also be reflected in her teaching and thus will benefit other Australian flute players.
