2010 Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship

Media Profile

“The coursework in musical literature taught in Universities across the USA is regarded as the finest in the world.”

Sam Nester, a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of the Performing Arts, Edith Cowan University, has been awarded a Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship to undertake a Master of Music, in Classical Trumpet at the Manhattan School of Music.

Sam said that his studies in music at an American University would provide him the necessary skills and knowledge to tackle the life of an elite musician here in Australia.

“The Master of Music program is designed to foster high achievement in the performance of music, as well as a broad intellectual development,” Sam said.

“I will have the experience of the finest artists and educators to call upon, and will be immersed in the rich cultural life the United States is well recognized for.”

As part of the course, Sam will be required to engage in analytical skills, research and writing skills as well as being involved at the highest level of performance training available.

“This course will greatly enhance my chance of successfully applying to a professional symphony orchestra as a fulltime member, and will give me both the credentials and skills required to further my ability toward becoming an educator at the University level,” Sam said.

“This means that I will have the ability to work at the tertiary level upon returning to Australia, to implement my knowledge and share these cultural experiences.”

Sam has a Bachelor of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University and a further Bachelor of Music with first class Honours from the Western Australian Academy of the Performing Arts, Edith Cowan University. In recent years, he has been privileged to perform with the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and in 2009 was fortunate enough to work as the conductor on the Victorian Opera’s sell out production of Benjamin Britten’s The Little Sweep, in their 2009 youth opera production. He has been involved in many international competitions and festivals, and in his spare time enjoys walking and is a supporting member of the Wilderness Society of Australia.
