Fulbright Postgraduate Scholar (2006-2007)
“The Fulbright program has transformed the way I view the world around me. Our research is contributing to women’s health on an international level. I have experienced the value of travelling to faraway places, and the realization that I am making a difference in the world.”
Lindsay was a Fulbright Scholar in Adelaide Australia working in the School of Paediatrics and Reproductive Health at The University of Adelaide. She conducted research on the effects of body weight/diet on female fertility. Lindsay was also able to undertake her research at the Repromed Clinic, the largest assisted reproduction clinic in South Australia and among one of the most productive in vitro fertililization centers in the world.
Lindsay’s Fulbright experience has expanded her view of the world: “I learned more about what it means to be an American in the one year living abroad on my Fulbright, than in the 21 years I spent growing up in the U.S. I have a new appreciation for the leadership role America has in the world, and I now recognize that along with the inherent privilege of being an American, there is a tremendous responsibility to the rest of the world.”
Lindsay identifies the opportunity to join the wider Fulbright network as a highlight of her Scholarship year. “Throughout this year I have met Fulbright Alumni at various functions and have been continually inspired by the passion they have for their work, as well as their lasting commitment to the Fulbright Program.”
“A Fulbright Scholarship is much more than the year you spend abroad.” According to Lindsay, it impacts your goals in life. “To be a Fulbright Scholar is an awesome responsibility and for the rest of my life I will strive to uphold the vision that Senator Fulbright put forward more than half a century ago. As a Fulbright Scholar, it is humbling to be forever connected to a program that is synonymous with academic excellence, hard work, and the contribution to the betterment of our global society.”
In reflecting on her time in Australia, Lindsay encouraged future scholars to embrace all the opportunities and to immerse yourself not only in your research but the culture of your host country. “Try new things. Make the most of every opportunity. Recognize that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Do not loose sight of the cultural immersion dimension of the Fulbright, it will change the way you look at the world. And above all, recognize that as a Fulbright Scholar you are part of a legacy of leaders that can and should make a positive difference in the world.”
