Distinguished Chair in American Political Science 2005-2010

The Distinguished Chair Program is viewed as among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Established in 2005, in collaboration with the Australian-American Fulbright Commission and the Australian National University, this scholarship is for a leading U.S. professor to conduct collaborative research at the host institution along with guest lectures at advanced undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A national tour with guest presentations at institutions across Australia is coordinated in cooperation with the Fulbright Commission and the U.S. Embassy. The scholarship supports a 4-5 month position.

The Fulbright Distinguished Chair Program operates through the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) and operates much like the U.S. Senior Scholar Program.

There are currently only annually about 40 Fulbright Distinguished Chairs across 15 countries. The Australian Fulbright Distinguished Chair is the only Fulbright Distinguished Chair outside of Europe and Israel, and the first ever in the East Asia Pacific.

  • The inaugural Fulbright ANU Distinguished Chair (for 2006) was Kenneth Mayer, Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
  • Dr Patricia Sykes, Associate Professor at the American University was the 2007/2008 Chair and
  • Dr James Lengle, Associate Professor from Georgetown University was the Chair for 2008/2009
  • Dr Diana Dwyre, Professor of Political Science at California State University, Chico was the Chair for 2009/10
  • Professor Ric Ulsaner, Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland was the 2010 Chair.

From 2011 the Distinguished Chair will be hosted by Flinders University in South Australia.
